Consider this risk/reward scenario: spraining a wrist after vigorous masturbation. Or what about this game ending condition: death from embarrassment.
These are just two mechanics described in a recent post on GameSetWatch exploring the Australian cellphone game, Coolest Girl in School.
The game comes from the mind of Holly Owen and her co-designers at their company, Champagne for the Ladies. In it, players will enter a high school wracked by the recent death of their presumptive prom queen –whose remains include nothing more than a tiara, bra, and a pile of ashes. From there, according to GameSetWatch, “the player now has the opportunity to lie, bitch, gossip, suck up and flirt their way to making as many friends as possible so that they can be nominated for the prom queen title.”
This is no Imagine Babyz, or anything else from the Ubisoft's wholesome 'girl games.' If anything Coolest Girl in School proves games made for a female audience are capable of just as much controversy and finger pointing as the violent shooters made for their male peers. It did cause a stir last year when the Australian Family Association referred to the game as "toxic." Accepting their controversy, the game makers gave their game the tongue in cheek tag “GTA for girls.”
There's more to Coolest Girl in School than a lowbrow take on a John Hughes script. Playing with the notion of popularity and shame, the game makers created MySpace pages for their non-playable characters, giving players further chances to up their social standing. 'We are the first mobile game to involve a social network. Players can communicate with game characters [via the characters' MySpace pages], get 'codes' for contraband and clues about how to suitably suck up to the right peeps. The game can be played with or without the social network, but just like school, it's all about who you know,' Owen explains.
